Andrew Novak’s Journey to Heart Recovery: Retired Forklift Operator Survives Massive Heart Attack

Portrait of Impella patient Andrew Novak with his wife

My name is Andrew Novak, I am 51 years old and I’m a retired forklift operator from Parma, OH. When I began experiencing shortness of breath and severe chest pain, I told my wife, Becky, I may need to go the hospital. Moments later, she found me unresponsive on the couch. Becky and my daughter began CPR while they called 911 and EMS transported me to UH Parma Medical Center.

Upon arrival at the catheterization lab, Dr. Paul Poomimpanit identified a totally occluded left anterior descending artery (LAD) and quickly opened the blockage and placed a stent. However, I was in cardiogenic shock and my ejection fraction was below 10%. Dr. Poomimpanit inserted the Impella CP® to support my weak heart and allow it to rest and recover. Though my long road to recovery included dialysis and rehab, I am now living an active lifestyle.

Today, I cherish every moment with Becky and my four children. I am also enjoying tending my nearly five acres of land. I am so thankful to the staff at UH Parma Medical Center for helping me get a second chance at life.
