Father Back With His Family After Collapsing on a Run

Israel Contreras, 32, is an active husband and father from San Diego, CA. While he was jogging at a local park, Israel suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, a nurse was running behind him and quickly administered CPR and called 911.

Paramedics transported Israel to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, CA. Using a cardiogenic shock algorithm, Dr. Jad Omran and his team quickly transferred Israel to the cardiac catheterization lab where they determined he was in cardiogenic shock. They implanted the Impella CP® heart pump to support Israel’s weak heart. Days later, Israel’s heart had recovered enough to function on its own and the Impella was weaned and explanted.

Israel was discharged home within two weeks with normal heart function. Today, Israel is back to work and enjoying every moment with his two daughters and wife.
