Marine Enjoying Life Following His Protected PCI Procedure

Grant Queen is a husband, Marine and former schoolteacher from Lewisville, NC. In 2022, he began experiencing shortness of breath and exertional fatigue. When his symptoms became so severe that he couldn’t walk without needing to stop and rest, he made an appointment with Dr. Samuel Turner at Novant Health in Winston-Salem, NC.

Tests revealed Grant had coronary artery multivessel disease and a reduced ejection fraction of 30 percent. Due to his age, severity of disease and other comorbidities, he was not a candidate for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). Dr. Turner explained to Grant that he was a candidate for a Protected PCI procedure with Impella®. In August 2022, Dr. Turner implanted Impella CP® with SmartAssist® to allow Grant’s heart to rest while he placed multiple stents and performed a complete revascularization. One day later, Grant returned home with his wife, Elizabeth.

Today, Grant has improved heart function and he’s now able to walk on the treadmill, feed the birds and make his famous peanut brittle for Elizabeth, the love of his life.
