Father's Heart Fully Recovers From COVID-19

Bobby Goines, 31, a husband, father, and sales representative from Conway, AR, lives an active lifestyle. When he’s not working at his computer, Bobby can be found renovating his home and playing on a men’s softball league. Bobby tested positive for COVID-19 in early January 2022, and within days he experienced shortness of breath and chest pain. He called 911 and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Medical teams evaluated Bobby and determined his heart was severely weak. He was transported to CHI St. Vincent in Little Rock, AR, for escalated care. Upon arrival, physicians identified that Bobby had myocarditis due to COVID-19 and was in cardiogenic shock with a severely reduced ejection fraction (below 10%). Dr. Thurston Bauer implanted Impella 5.5® with SmartAssist® to support the heart and allow it to rest. Bobby’s condition continued to improve, and he was able to walk in the unit while on Impella support. After eight days, Impella® was weaned and removed, and Bobby returned home with normal heart function.

Today, Bobby is back to work and playing in his softball league. But most importantly, he is enjoying time with his wife Carly and three children.
