The Importance of Physical Activity

There are many benefits to regular exercise. Not only does regular exercise build and strengthen your muscles, it also improves your mental and heart health.

Exercise is particularly great for your heart because it can reduce blood pressure and lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other chronic health issues. Exercise can also help improve your body’s cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

But how much exercise is really needed? For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. This can include activities such as walking, running, swimming, or cycling. If this feels too daunting, exercising in 10-minute increments can also be beneficial to your heart.

Most importantly, any physical activity is better than none at all. Living a sedentary lifestyle can have a negative impact on your overall health. So, get out there and take your dog for walk, form a walking group, or take a bike ride. Your heart will thank you! If you have questions about your exercise habits, please consult with your physician.
