Dirk Michels
Global Head of Strategy & Innovation
During his more than 25 years with the company Dirk has made significant contributions expanding access to Impella heart pump technology across the globe through many leadership roles. In his role as global head of strategy and innovation, Dirk drives essential capabilities for growth by leading product R&D, innovation excellence, healthcare solutions, health economics and strategic marketing communication.
Based in our Aachen, Germany, headquarters, Dirk has led teams in engineering, supply chain, product management and marketing. Prior to Abiomed, Dirk held multiple positions at Impella CardioSystems and led the Impella production ramp up when Abiomed acquired Impella CardioSystems in 2005. He also holds two patents for his work in the development and marketing of the Impella heart pump, which ultimately led to the CE mark of approval in Europe.
Dirk attended Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen University and earned a master’s in mechanical engineering.
