Jim Young’s Journey to Heart Recovery: Family Man Survives Heart Attack

My name is Jim Young, and I was 72 years old when I suffered a heart attack while driving a freight truck to work. Although I don’t remember, I was told my truck veered off the road. Fortunately, a retired doctor saw the accident and began performing CPR while waiting for EMTs to arrive and transport me to Mercy Health in Muskegon, MI.

Upon arriving at the hospital, I was in cardiogenic shock. Interventional cardiologists, Dr. Dirk Bonnema and Dr. John Skallerup inserted the Impella CP® to allow my heart to rest before placing stents. After two days, my heart showed signs of recovery and the Impella CP was weaned and explanted. Eight days later, I was able to leave the hospital with my native heart.

Today, I have returned to work putting together parts for freight trucks. My wife, Gwen, and I are looking forward to seeing our oldest child retire from the Air Force and our youngest grandchild graduate high school.
