Mass. (September 09, 2004) – ABIOMED, Inc. (NASDAQ:
ABMD) today announced the appointment of Frank Menzler as General
Manager for ABIOMED, B.V., the Company's European division. Mr. Menzler
was most recently Marketing Manager for Cardiac Surgery for Guidant
Europe, and was a co-founder of Impella Cardiotechnik AG, a developer
of minimally invasive blood pumps for use in coronary surgery and
cardiology.

As General Manager, Mr. Menzler will be responsible for all business
issues in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He comes to ABIOMED with
more than a decade of experience in the areas of sales, marketing,
business development, research and development, and investor relations
for medical device and life science companies. During his tenure
at Guidant, he increased revenue substantially and restructured
the Cardiac Surgery EMEAC Organization (Europe, Middle East, Africa,
and Canada). Prior, he co-founded and worked for four years at Impella
Cardiotechnik AG, where he managed strategic business planning,
helped building the initial organization and coordinated the financing
rounds, helping to raise more than $30 million in grants and venture
capital. While at Impella, he became a member of the delegation
of the NRW State Minister of Economic Affairs.
Mr. Menzler earned his Engineering Masters Degree from RWTH Aachen
(University of Technology) in Aachen, Germany and his MBA from the
Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston,
USA. He also serves on the Advisory Board for HepaLife Technologies
Inc, a development stage biotechnology company focused on the treatment
of liver dysfunction and disease.
