Mr. Michael R. Minogue is Abiomed’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President.  He joined Abiomed in April 2004 following a successful twelve-year career at GE Healthcare.  Mr. Minogue departed GE as the Vice President and General Manager of Americas Sales and Marketing for the $1B Information Technology business.  From 1997 to 2004, Mr. Minogue held various global leadership positions in sales, marketing, customer service, engineering management, and software development for GE.  Mr. Minogue led the Positron Emission Technology division, Americas Cardiology Sales and Marketing, Global Installed Base business, and MRI Americas marketing.  Prior to joining GE, Mr. Minogue served on active duty for four years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army and received multiple awards.  Mr. Minogue received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering management from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his MBA from the University of Chicago.  Mr. Minogue currently serves on the board of directors of LifeCell Corporation (LIFC) and for AdvaMed, the Advanced Medical Technology Association.  Since joining Abiomed, Mr. Minogue has focused the company on heart recovery in order to treat a broader patient population with new products developed in-house and by acquisition, such as Impella.

Dr. W. Gerald Austen, M.D., has served as a Director of the Company since 1985. Since 1974 he has been the Edward D. Churchill Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and at Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1969 to 1997, Dr. Austen was Chief of the Surgical Services at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Austen is the former President of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American Surgical Association and the Massachusetts and American Heart Associations. Dr. Austen is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a life member of the corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.


Mr. Ronald W. Dollens joined ABIOMED's Board of Directors in January 2006. Mr. Dollens is the retired President and Chief Executive Officer and founding board member of Guidant Corporation, the $3.7 billion company he formed following its split-off from Eli Lilly and Company in 1995. Prior to his position at Guidant, Mr. Dollens was President of Eli Lilly's Medical Devices and Diagnostics Division (MDD). Mr. Dollens' industry leadership includes the position as past Director and Chairman of the Board of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), the world's largest medical technology association; as well as past Chairman of the Healthcare Leadership Counsel. He has served on the Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform, a group appointed by former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson.

Mr. Louis E. Lataif joined ABIOMED's Board of Directors in September 2005. Mr. Lataif has served as Dean of Boston University School of Management since 1991. Prior to joining Boston University, he worked at Ford Motor Company for more than 27 years and retired as a corporate officer. He had also served as President of Ford of Europe and has extensive global experience. Mr. Lataif earned a BS from Boston University and an MBA from Harvard University. He is the recipient of three honorary doctoral degrees.

Mr. Desmond H. O'Connell, Jr. has served as Director of the Company since 1995. He is currently the Chairman and a Director of Serologicals Corporation and is also an independent management consultant. From December 1992 until December 1993, he served as the Chairman, Management Committee, of Pharmakon Research International, Inc. During 1991, he briefly served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Osteotech, Inc. Mr. O'Connell was with the BOC Group, PLC in senior management positions from 1983 to 1990. From April 1990 until September 1990, Mr. O'Connell was President and Chief Executive Officer of BOC Health Care. From 1986 to April 1990, he was Group Managing Director of BOC Group, PLC. Prior to joining BOC, Mr. O'Connell held various positions at Baxter Laboratories, Inc., including Chief Executive of the Therapeutic and Diagnostic Division and Vice President, Corporate Development. Mr. O'Connell was a Director of Chryslais International Corporation from 1991 through May 1999.

Ms. Dorothy E. Puhy has served as a Director of the Company and chair of its Audit Committee since 2003. Ms. Puhy is currently Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Treasurer for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ("Dana-Farber"). Ms. Puhy has served as the Chief Financial Officer of Dana-Farber since 1994 and has served as its Assistant Treasurer since 1995. From 1985 to 1994 Ms. Puhy held various financial positions at the New England Medical Center Hospitals, Inc., including Chief Financial Officer from 1989 to 1994. Ms. Puhy is also a Director and chair of the Audit Committee of Reebok International Ltd.

Dr. Eric A. Rose joined Abiomed’s Board of Directors in May 2007. Dr. Rose led the development of a premier Department of Surgery at Columbia University and is currently on leave as Chairman of Columbia’s Department of Surgery, a position he held since 1994. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the board of SIGA Technologies, Inc., a leading biotechnology firm. Dr. Rose co-founded TransTech Pharma (TTP), Inc., a pharmaceutical company, and also serves as Executive Vice President for Life Sciences at MacAndrews and Forbes, Inc. He received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. His postgraduate training was in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Martin P. Sutter is one of the two founding managing directors of Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, one of the oldest and largest healthcare focused venture capital firms with nearly $3 billion under management. Mr. Sutter has more than 30 years of management experience in operations, marketing, finance and venture capital. Mr. Sutter currently serves on the Board of Directors of BioForm Medical, LaJolla Pharmaceuticals, and LifeCell Corporation, which is in the process of being acquired by Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI). He formerly sat on the Board of Confluent Surgical, which was acquired by Tyco International; Rinat Neuroscience, which was acquired by Pfizer Inc.; and St. Francis Medical Technologies, which was acquired by Kyphon, Inc. Mr. Sutter is also responsible for the partnership's investment in Spinal Concepts, which was acquired by Abbott Laboratories.

Mr. Henri A. Termeer has served as a Director of the Company since 1987. Mr. Termeer has been the president and a director of Genzyme Corporation since 1983, its Chief Executive Officer since 1985, and its chairman since 1988. Mr. Termeer is a member of the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows, Chairman of the Harvard Medical School Genetics Advisory Council, and Chairman of the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI). He also serves on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of American (PhRMA) and is a trustee of Hambrecht & Quist Healthcare Investors and Hambrecht & Quist Life Sciences Investors.
